Smooth, pleasant-looking, fair-haired British leading man (born in South Africa) with patrician good looks and Leslie Howard-like panache who sustained productive film careers in both England and Hollywood for most of his four-decade career opposite more florid female stars, such as Bette Davis.

He played Capt. Kovacs in the first Broadway production of Ferenc Molnár's "Olympia". The play was subsequently filmed as His Glorious Night (1929) with John Gilbert, and again as A Breath of Scandal (1960) with Sophia Loren.
